• Not My Mother’s Stretch Pants

My friend C.L. (whom I’ll credit with the title for today’s blog)  and I were talking clothes this morning and I mentioned how much I love my Land’s End yoga pants. She immediately chimed in with, “Oh yes, I love my yoga pants, I probably have seven pairs! I put them on as soon as I get home from work and live in them all weekend.” “I know what you mean,” I agreed. “I have at least that many pairs. I work in them every day–they’re so incredibly comfortable. They’re not all big and baggy like sweatpants. They fit you and always look great, so you can pair them with…

  • Let’s Hear It for Love after 50

I’m bugged. It seems that romance novels are the bailiwick of characters who are younger than 50. If 40 is the new 30 and 50 is the new 40, then how come romance after 50 isn’t sexy anymore? Well, folks, I’ve got big news–sexy is timeless.  Excuse me, but two words, Pierce Brosnan. Sean Connery? Jeff Bridges? Denzel Washington, anyone? Richard Gere? And as far as sexy women are concerned–want to talk about Susan Sarandon? Sophia Loren? Goldie Hawn? Helen Mirren? Tina Turner? Me? (Sorry, I couldn’t resist!) Hollywood is beginning to get it. I thoroughly enjoyed the film Something”s Gotta Give—a love story between two people well over age…

  • Thursday Links

I love a good mystery novel, and Kate George’s Bree MacGowan books are a treat. Right now, Kate’s having a contest on her blog right now—go on by, leave a comment, and you could win an Amazon gift card, plus discover a couple of fun mysteries. The Family Addiction is three sisters talking about books—delightful blog and Carrie, Amy and Sarah remind me a little of me and my two sisters. Enjoy, everyone!

  • Wednesday’s Links

Wow, I did something this morning that I haven’t done in more years than I can remember—I slept in. Now by “in,” I mean 9 a.m., but when my habit is to rise a little before 6, have breakfast with Husband, make his lunch, send him out the door, and be at my worktable by about 7:30, this is big. I was up late last night editing and when the alarm went off this morning, I simply couldn’t face the day yet. So I stayed in bed, snoozed for a bit longer, and woke up more ready to start back in on work. Coffee in hand, I’m getting back into…

  • Tuesday’s Links

Today, I’m sending you to StoryWonk, the fabulous podcasts of writers, Lani Diane Rich and Alastair Stephens. They talk daily about stories, the craft of writing, and the life of a writer. They also offer seminars and classes on writing. Every so often they have guests, but mostly it’s the two of them, sharing insights and ideas about writing. Even if you aren’t a writer, go for the fun chemistry between these two…and for Alastair’s Scottish accent… And on a completely different note, I’ve been using this website in my struggle to get my body back into shape: LIVESTRONG. It’s a great place to track food and exercise–counts calories for…

  • I’m Buried

This week, I’m buried under a big editing gig, so I’m going send you to two blogs each day that I think you’ll enjoy. Today’s redirects are: Chick Lit Writers and Word Wranglers. Deborah Blake is interviewing the amazing Lucy March at Chick Lit Writers, so go and discover more about Lucy and her new book A Little Night Magic. Liz Flaherty’s guest today at Word Wranglers is author/editor/teacher Alicia Rasley, who’s talking about writing opening chapters. Alicia always has great advice for writers, so go by and learn about starting a story. Check back tomorrow for two more great blogs…have fun!!

  • My Heroes

This is a convoluted path to a blog about heroes, but I promise if you stay with me, we’ll wind up in a place that mostly makes sense. The other day on the Bettyverse, Blonde Betty talked about e-reader versus print books, which naturally led to the Betties responding not only with their favorite way to read (digital vs. paper), but also their favorite books, which brought me to my favorite books.  (We’re almost there, I promise.) I came down on the side of e-readers, so thinking of my favorite books made me recall that one of the first books I downloaded on my Kindle was Gene Stratton Porter’s The…

  • Alicia Rasley Part 2

I’m pleased to welcome author/editor Alicia Rasley back to the blog, continuing her article about preparing her backlist titles for e-pub. Take it away Alicia… Editing With Myself Part OneTwo  Last week I blogged about the initial tasks involved in preparing old backlist books for republication. I have to keep reminding myself this isn’t as hard as writing the books in the first place! But no doubt about it, the next two tasks were the most mindbending: Choosing a cover, and editing the content. Covers Hey, turns out covers are copyrighted! And to the artist! Who knew! So I couldn’t use the original covers from the print books, however convenient…

  • A Winter Saturday

So the scene is this: mid-morning at the breakfast table. I’m facing the windows that look out on the snow-covered back yard where a crimson cardinal is perched on the arbor in the herb garden. The sun is finally shining after days of dreary gray skies and rain, but since the temperature is only 32 degrees I’m resisting the urge to go outside and bask in its warmth. Besides, that means I’d actually have to rise from my chair and I’m disinclined. I’ve been a weird state of mind since Christmas, and I’m not sure why. I think it’s partly because of worrying about my health, although since the cardiologist’s…
