Sunday Snippet: The August 2026 Memos Edition
I do these every so often–these memos. I’d like to tell you it’s all about catching up, taking a breath, landing somewhere for a few minutes. I suppose it is all those things, but mostly, it’s because I can’t think of anything to blog about except what’s happening in our country and I need to not think about that right now. I don’t want this blog to be political–you all know my politics and I know most of yours. All we can do in that regard is keep staying alert and vote, vote, vote.
So we’re going to do the August memos today.
Dear Weather,
Ummmm… could you pick a lane please? Pleasantly cool or stiflingly hot? Wet as a herring or dry as the Kalahari? I know it’s August in the Midwest and this typical, but it doesn’t make it any nicer. How about the mid-70s as we go into September? But no…you’ve chosen the 90s.
Sighing,
Nan

Wow… just wow. You’ve really put on a show this summer! Somehow you’ve managed to revive those gorgeous pink spring primroses along the sidewalk, the verbena is everywhere, and the rudbeckia is wild with sunny color. Thanks for the show… it’s brightened our lives.
Blooming,
Nan

Dear Book 1 in the new series,
So time to start talking… I’ve got a start, but your story is lagging. I’m listening…
Creatively (or at least trying),
Nan

Thank you. That’s all, really, just thank you…
Caffeinatedly,
Nan

Know what I love? Having all my books at my fingertips no matter where I am. I can read whenever I like–at the hairdresser, in the doctor’s waiting room, in the car on the way to the lake, at night in bed… books are always at hand. I like that.
Literarily,
Nan

Dear September,
Could you get here, please and with some balmy day, lovely breezes, and crisp cool nights? I’m ready for apples and changing leaves and walks in the ‘hood to admire the reds, yellows, and oranges of fall trees. (Refer to memo #1 above)
Autumnally,
Nan

Dear November 3,
Yes, I did say I wasn’t up for talking about politics or the mess our country is in, but I’m reneging for a moment because you are a date that I hope with all my strength and soul will change our current circumstances. I hope you are a beautiful day in every state so that folks will want to vote, vote, vote. That elections will come off with such a huge blue wave that no one can deny or argue with the results. That we can rescue our government from those who would destroy democracy. So, election day, please, bring on the blue tsunami!
Hopefully,
Nan
Gratitude for This Week: Got some writing done; N.N. Light’s Backlist Bonanza promo is bringing new readers to River’s Edge; 99-cent Meant to Be is doing well (yay, BookBub); BIL Larry turns 80; We got the whole dead lilac bush taken down–took us three hours, but we kicked ass for a couple of old folks.
Stay well, stay vigilant, always choose kindness, and most of all, mes amis, stay grateful!

I am so ready for summer to be over. I am not a fan of hot, humid weather and we have had our fill. Add to that a dead heat pump that couldn’t be replaced for 3 weeks and it was miserable. Fall has always been my favorite season. I am looking forward to the cooler temperatures. brisk air, fall colors, fall produce, and the smell of fallen leaves and the earth. Yes, Nov. 3 is an important day. Hopefully, enough people will come out with a blue wave to take bacck our country. My biggest fear is that something will happen to interfere with the election. Power outages, voter machines being “adjusted” (Musk is back in the picture), troops at the poles, and the validity of people’s registration being called into question so they can’t vote. Or hi might just declare an emergency and cancel them all together. You know he will try something if he thinks he won’t win.
Stay well. Stay cool. Enjoy what is left og the summer.

Yay on getting some writing done, Nan. Hope you have a fantastic week.
