Authors on the Road Day 3

Well, kids, I’m tired, I’m brain dead after a day of writing and I’ve had too much wine (I blame Liz for that, although I poured it myself, but she could’ve stopped me.)  That’s me in my “writing sweater”–a very tattered sweater that once belonged to my sister Kate, who left us way too soon. I wear to write because it’s magic–words come when I have it on. I think they come in through the holes… I could be wrong about that, but I don’t think I am.

It was a day of all writing all the time. We didn’t even leave the condo building. It was a miserable weather anyway, so it was a great day to stay in and work. We kept the home fires burning–literally–the fireplace was going all day long because it was stinking cold in the condo.

We eventually and brilliantly figured out that we had the thermostat still set on Cool, rather than switching it over to Heat. Sigh… great writers are often sometimes clueless when it comes to complicated technology like digital thermostats.

After writing most of the day, we went downstairs and spent about an hour in the heated pool, moving. Necessary because when you sit on your butt all day in front of computer, movement is eventually mandatory.

Yesterday we processed my story and that was fabulous. Today, we processed Liz’s and she said it really helped. After we wrote and swam, we ordered pizza delivered. Frankly, it took longer to order the pizza than to eat it… but it was pretty tasty anyway.

Tomorrow is hair and history day. We’re going to get our hair washed and blown out and then heading to the Ulysses S. Grant home and some other historic sites as well as down to see the Mississippi River. It seemed just wrong to be so close and not wander down to see it.

That’s it, mes amis. Yes, yes, two writers on retreat are just this exciting.

Stay safe!

Nan & Liz
