Ava is at the party her friends wanted to throw to meet a handsome and suspiciously charming new man in town.
It should have been a fabulous party. It probably was a fabulous party, even if Ava was standing alone in a corner not feeling fabulous.
A string quartet played in the opposite corner. They were excellent, but a little too loud for the space, and most people didn’t come to a party to listen to the music. The guests standing closest to the band were shouting to be heard, which meant the people near them had to raise their voices as well, and the total volume was a roar as loud as an old combine but less useful.
The catered food looked gorgeous, and judging by the murmurs of pleasure, it was tasty as well. Somehow the menu had grown to far more than an afternoon tea. They had tiny quiches, puff pastry wrapped around various fillings, miniature crabcakes, and baked brie with prosciutto and roasted figs. The dip that the fancy caterer called “cowboy caviar” looked suspiciously like they had added mango and papaya to the traditional black-eyed peas, corn, and veggies.
The food tables couldn’t have been less like a typical church potluck. No pigs in a blanket made with refrigerated crescent roll dough. No garishly colored gelatin studded with unlikely ingredient combinations. No cheesy pepperoni pizza puffs, made in muffin tins and served with marinara sauce from a jar.
Ava felt irrationally annoyed. She knew it was irrational, but she still couldn’t bring herself to visit the buffet.

Thanks, Janine! I was surprised by how much I enjoyed writing it, since cowboys and billionaires aren’t my favorite hero types. Maybe I’ll revisit cowboys one day, but right now I’m writing Pride and Prejudice at the Cat Café (book 7 in my sweet romance series set at a cat café). And then I have mysteries to write!
