Patricia W. Fischer is an award-winning writer, and former percussionist, actress, singer, waitress, bartender, pre-cook, and finally a trauma nurse before she realized she needed to get her butt to a journalism class.
After earning her journalism degree from Washington University, Patricia written for numerous publications about women’s health, foster/adoption advocacy, ovarian cancer education, and entertainment features.
These days she spends her days with her family, two dogs, and a few fish while she creates a good story with a touch of reality, a dash of laughter, and a whole lot of love.

Finishing that Last Book of the Series

In November 2012, my first (published) book went live and we adopted two children from foster care.
Add in the holiday chaos, and I was a very busy and blessed individual.
Like so many other writers, I had the next few books plotted out and even outlined. I knew what I wanted the next stories to say. All I needed to do was get those words out of my head by carving out time to write them.
Easy peasy, right?
Not so much.
My next book didn’t come out for a couple of years and it was in a completely different series I created. While the first series sat there, waiting for the sequel, I went on and wrote something else between juggling four kids under the age of ten, deadlines, and all the other things that come with daily life.
How I wrote four books in less than six months, I have no idea.
I give coffee most of the credit.
As frustrated as I was with not writing that sequel (it’s still sitting there by the way), that new series brought me to Tule and earned me my first contract, and made me the fifth author in the Men of Marietta Series. After that, I pitched the Davidson siblings for the Marietta Medical series. The first three books went pretty well, but the fourth, Adopting with the Doctor, proved to be the hardest of the group to write. Why? By then, we had teenagers and COVID and all the other chaos that so many others were juggling.
But to be fair, I was the biggest barrier to completion.
Since the story centered around adoption, I needed it to ring true. To be accurate. To be heartfelt.
Digging into our own adoption journey proved to be difficult at times since there were moments I’d rather not relive. Moments when I literally sobbed on our kitchen floor when the updates from our social worker didn’t lean in our favor. When I cried when updates turned positive and every emotion along the spectrum. Adoption, and adopting from foster care, presents their own challenges.
It’s not always what you want, what I want, but what’s best for the child.
No, that doesn’t always align as we want it to. Sometimes it’s the last thing you hoped would happen, and that can be a very bitter pill to swallow. In fact, it’s gut wrenching to know you can do everything right, and it still not lean in your direction. This is one of the many reasons why so many don’t even enter the foster/adoption conversation, but to tell this story accurately, I had to reach into that emotional history and bare my heart and soul on the pages.
To say I didn’t cry writing certain passages would be a lie. I cried happy, sad, and honest tears to bring Susan and Reynolds together. For them to take risks to become a family.
Hopefully, I’ve given them that happily ever after they so deserve.
Adopting with the Doctor

And a young mother who always planned to give up her baby for adoption and thinks Susan and Reynolds will make the perfect parents!
Susan and Reynolds haven’t even been on a date yet, when they agree to a perfectly rational, logical, platonic co-parenting arrangement while adoption plans proceed. But can their instant connection, best intentions, and desire to give this baby girl their very best withstand the potential heartbreak of the adoption falling through?
