Sunday Snippet: The October Memos Edition
It’s memo time, which can be translated as I got nothin’ today, so we’ll rehash last month on this first day of the new month. Here we go…
Dear October,
So how did you fly by so fast? One moment we were out on the boat cruising the lake for my birthday, and the next, the boat’s in storage and we’re cutting back the hostas around the lake cottage. Where did you go? What was your hurry?
Still in a Summer Frame of Mind,
Nan

Dear Weather,
Okay, you convinced me–my state with its four seasons is the most glorious. Sunny days with bright blue skies, trees changing to their autumn colors, the scent of crisp autumn air is just fabulous. I love looking out my kitchen window to see the neighbor’s maple tree all golden. We’ve been outside doing fall cleanup and even that arduous work is okay when the temperatures are in the sixties and the breezes are ruffling our hair. Thanks for sunshine, although, and I hate to complain, we could use some rain.
Coolly,
Nan

Dear Son, DIL, and Grandboy,
What fun to have a couple of days at the lake with y’all. And how grand to see you relax and enjoy some time out on the lake, fishing and boating. Dinners together were so much fun, games and wine on the porch made my and Poppy’s hearts happy. Looking to more times like these next summer.
Love you x3,
Mom/Ma/Nanny

Dear Arthritic Knee,
Okay, you win. When walking is too painful to bear and you are hurting even when I’m sitting or trying to sleep–you win. I’ve fought seeing an ortho about you for too many years to count. I’ve done all the things I’m supposed to do–walked, swam, exercised. I’ve tried every possible fix from supplements to braces to kineseotape to shots to stretching to … well, you get the picture. I surrender. I’m going to the Ortho on Tuesday to make a plan because by God, you are NOT keeping me from going to France next fall.
Onward,
Nan

My Dearest Bestie,
October brought you such terrible sorrow and oh, how I hate that. I hate that the miles between us keeps me from running next door to bring you warm fresh cookies and share a morning cup of coffee. Know that you are always, always in my heart and that I’m glad we have gChat each morning, where I know we’re sharing a cup of coffee even if we’re not in the same room or same city.
With great love and comfort,
Your Nan

Dear Cancer,
F*#k you.

Dear Characters in My Current WIP,
Keep talking. We’re on a deadline and your story is moving along, but it needs to get told. I’m settling into Montana and the research for horse rescues is pretty darn fascinating, but I keep falling down rabbit holes. I need you to pull me back to the story so I can get it done.
Writing and then Writing More,
Nan

Dear Mo and Min,
I hope I say it enough, but if I don’t–you two are the best booth babes ever! I can’t imagine a book event without one of you by my side. You keep me organized and are fabulous sherpas with my boxes and bags. You handle the sales while I connect with readers, which is what it’s all about. We have three events coming up between now and Christmas, and I’m so grateful to know one of you will be with me for each one.
Eternally grateful,
Author Nan
P.S. Bonus! Mo, you are a great travel companion–grateful you could step in for my writing retreat in WI. Hugs, baby!

Gratitude for This Week: I voted!! We got the city house gardens almost all cleaned up; my mums are glorious and full of color (thank you, Mary and Betty); a massage and adjustment were renewing; I rescued the box of Husband’s coffee pods I left at the checkout at Meijer (nice folks held them for me at the customer service desk)
Stay well, vote, vote, vote on Tuesday–our democracy depends on it, always choose kindness, and most of all, mes amis, stay grateful!
