Kris Bock’s Death at Rock Bottom Reluctantly Psychic #Mystery and Green Chile Muffins #recipe

In Reluctantly Psychic Mystery series, a quirky loner who can read the history of any object with her touch gets drawn into mysteries at the museum of oddities where she works. Book 2 is out now!

Death at Rock Bottom (A Reluctant Psychic Murder Mystery series book 2)

After solving the mystery of her predecessor’s death, geologist Petra Cloch wants to focus on her job as the rocks and minerals curator at a quirky, small town New Mexico museum. But her friend and colleague Liberty is suspicious of the supposedly accidental death of Frank Underwood, a retired petroleum engineer and rockhound who died while hiking. Frank acted odd in his last weeks, talking about something incredible he found in the desert and whispering about aliens. Was he showing the first signs of dementia, or were more sinister forces at work?

Petra wants to help Liberty uncover the truth, and before long their book club has somehow become a crime-fighting club. Petra uses her gift and her brains to fight through the confusing and contradictory clues along with her newfound family, but has someone gotten a taste for murder?

A Love of Good Food

These books don’t include recipes, but food is a part of them. Petra Gets lunch at the Burrito Shack or Park ‘n’ Shake, an old-fashioned drive-in. Her book club, which morphs into a crime fighting club, always has amazing snacks. Since they’re in New Mexico, dishes often include green chile. (FYI, chile is the correct local spelling for the New Mexico chile pepper.)

Here’s a recipe Petra would love! Many stores around the U.S. now have canned green chile, possibly in the section of Mexican foods. You could also try finally chopping jalapenos and giving them a quick fry in the bacon grease. Vegetarians can of course skip the bacon and use vegetable oil instead of bacon drippings.

Green Chile Muffins

I shared these muffins with my book club and they were a hit. You can also make these as “drop muffins.” Drop spoonfuls of the batter onto a baking sheet, using about ¼ to ½ cup of batter for each muffin. I think they’d be good with half flour and half cornmeal as well, though I haven’t tried that yet!

  • 18-cup muffin pan or a baking sheet, paper muffin cups (optional), spray oil
  • ½ pound bacon (6-8 slices)
  • 2 cups flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup milk
  • Vegetable oil if needed
  • 1 ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ¼ to ½ cup green chile (roasted, peeled, seeded, and diced) to taste
  1. Start preheating the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Cook the bacon by your preferred method. Drain, reserving the drippings.
  3. Spray oil muffin tins or use paper muffin cups and spray oil them too.
  4. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, and baking powder. Make a well in the center.
  5. Blend the egg and milk. Add to the well in the dry ingredients.
  6. Measure 1/3 cup of the bacon drippings. Add vegetable oil if necessary to get 1/3 cup. Add to the well in the dry ingredients. Quickly stir until the batter is moist but still lumpy.
  7. Crumble the bacon. Carefully fold in the bacon, cheese, and green chile.
  8. Fill each cup about 3/4 full or drop spoonfuls (about ¼ to ½ cup) of batter onto a baking sheet.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
