Let’s Head to Last Chance Beach

Come to Last Chance Beach…

“Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.” – Sarah Kay

My writing bestie, Liz Flaherty is part of a fun summer anthology that releases on August 4 and I got to read her short story in advance. If all the others are as great as Something New, then I’m all in! Welcome to the blog, Liz. Please tell us all about Last Chance Beach and your story, Something New

Although I left my “beach body” behind me many years and pounds and saggy inches a long time ago, my heart is still there. I still spend a week on a blanket on Pensacola or Topsail soaking up unhealthy rays and drinking coffee all day long and then finishing up with seafood somewhere like Peg Leg Pete’s and a couple of bushwhackers at Flounders.

Nan prefers the beaches of Lake Michigan, and I like them, too. We have so much fun chasing lighthouses and wineries when we spend time on Michigan’s West Coast.

But this strange summer of 2020, all my sand-and-surf time has been spent at the computer working, at the Kindle reading, or at the sewing machine making masks. What a time it’s been—a refresher course on gratitude, on caring for others, and on how much I like being with the guy I’ve been sharing beaches with for nearly 50 years.

It’s been, in a word, bittersweet. But having the opportunity to write Something New, one of the short stories in LAST CHANCE BEACH: Summer’s End, has been refreshing and fun—like a bushwhacker on steroids. Working with the other writers who are sharing the beach with me has been so much fun. (Admittedly, I’ve missed the salt, sand, and sun, but I have had the endless cup of coffee.)

In Something New, some of my favorite things in the world have come together to help tell Hass and Zeke’s story. A library, high school football, and a cat named Susie all play parts in showing the best friends that the only way to find something new is to re-visit something old.
