It’s Done!!

Okay, so I promised that I’d do a post of the reno work when it was done, so here we go. Most of the pics are pretty self-explanatory, but to recap: We had our dining room stripped and painted, the living room and hall/foyer/stairwell painted, and  the kitchen stripped and painted.  The cabinets were reworked by removing some and adding others to make the space more open and user friendly. The biggest thing was taking out the bulkhead cabinets over the peninsula, which completely opened up the space. We had new countertops installed as well as a new stove and microwave. We had all new hardwood flooring put in the entire downstairs except the living room— you’ll see that room has enough dark wood in it, so we left the carpet there. All in all, we’re thrilled and would recommend Edens’ Painting and Remodeling to anyone wanting a new look for their house.

Son says our kitchen and dining room are now sort of Tuscany meets Williamsburg—I love that description because it’s perfect! Exactly what I wanted! The rug in the dining room comes courtesy of Son and DIL, who in April, graciously sent it home with us in a giant duffel bag when I mentioned that we were going to try to find a rug for the dining room. It’s a Turkish Sumak rug that Son got when he first moved into his own apartment 11 years ago, and it’s always had a place of honor wherever they lived. But it’s hard to keep it neat and tidy with Grandboy scooting around, so it’s come to live at our house for a while.  I’ve covered the table with an old bowtie quilt that’s kind of rough, but I love the idea of using an antique quilt as a table cloth. The stepback hutch is a piece left over from our days as antiques dealers, while the pie safe we rescued from Husband’s grandfather’s basement. It was covered in about seven coats of buttermilk paint. We love having it!

In the living room, the carpenter’s chest in front of the sofa is another piece we rescued from Grandpa’s basement. It was also covered in paint, but now it’s the perfect coffee table. Hopefully, you can see the gorgeous hardwood floors, and as a treat, I added a pic of Husband enjoying wine and Saturday supper in the newly painted breakfast nook that is now open to the kitchen instead of being divided by the giant bulkhead cabinets.

A huge shout out to all the crew that worked on the house and especially to Tim Edens, who was endlessly patient with us when we weren’t sure what we wanted and gave us so many great ideas to make the house look wonderful. Thanks, Tim! You’re the best—and yes, the bathrooms are next! But first, I have to sell some books…another post for another day…
